Serving · 9 Australian governments · 364 datasets · read every week

Australian government open data, in the format you and your AI need.

Every release a publisher makes becomes a dated version that stays where it is, with its schema, its provenance and a diff against the release before. Download it in 11 formats, query it from a URL, chart it in your browser, or hand it to an agent. There are no keys and no accounts.

Find a dataset by topic

Or by government

Every dataset served here sits under a topic. Each one comes with every format, a query API, a browser explorer and an agent that can answer from it.

Made for agents

Hand it to your agent

The MCP server at publicdata.au/mcp gives any agent 12 tools over every dataset served here. It can find a dataset, read its fields, count and filter across the whole table, diff two versions and vote for one that is not here yet. Every answer names the version it came from and carries the publisher's attribution, so the agent's answer names the government and links to the data.

The outlined names are the tools the demo beside this uses. Each name links to what its tool does.

What a published file becomes

One file from a portal. All of this.

Example dataset: Department of Treasury and Finance publishes daily fuel prices by service station, northern territory, 2017 to 2024 as one download. Here that download is a dated version, 11 formats, a map, a chart, a query API, a diff against the release before and a citation that resolves in ten years. The rows are not changed.

Versions

Every release, kept

A dataset here is the version history the portals do not keep. Each release becomes a dated version with the publisher's own file beside it, byte for byte, and a diff against the release before by the declared key. Cite a version URL and it will resolve to the same data in ten years.

The URL contract
  • /d/<slug>/latest/data.csv302 to the newest dated version
  • /d/<slug>/v/2026-10-19/data.csvkeeps its content, cached for a year
  • /d/<slug>/v/2026-10-19/source.csvthe publisher's file, byte for byte
  • /d/<slug>/v/2026-10-19/manifest.jsonsource URL, fetched-at, SHA-256
  • /d/<slug>/diff/<a>..<b>.jsonrows added, removed and changed by key
  • /d/<slug>/history.tar.zstevery version's Parquet and manifest

For the agencies that publish

The file you already published can look like this.

A dataset listed on your portal with an open licence can be served here without a request. The file is kept byte for byte. The licence and the attribution travel inside every format. An agent that answers from it names your agency and links to the version. Listing costs nothing.

0 changes to your rows. Cells are typed and headers renamed. Nothing is added, ranked or derived.

11 formats from one file. CSV, Excel, JSON, Parquet, SQLite, DuckDB, GeoJSON, GeoPackage and more.

1 URL per version, kept. A citation to it resolves to the same data in ten years.

$0 to the publisher and to the reader. No keys, no accounts, no download limit.

Query API

Ask from a URL

The query API returns only the rows you ask for, as JSON, NDJSON or CSV, from the same typed rows as the files. It needs no key. The answer names the version, the licence and the attribution. No key is needed, and the same call is what the agent tools make.

Files

One URL, 11 formats

Change the extension and the same version comes back as a different file. A dated version is cached for a year and keeps its content. latest/ redirects to the newest one. Files have no download limit.

Explorer

Chart every row in your browser

The explorer loads a version's Parquet file into DuckDB inside the browser and draws a dashboard over it. Click a bar to filter the other panels, add charts, and share the dashboard as a link or a frame. Nothing leaves the browser until you save a link, and there is no rate limit because there is no server in the way.

Every page has a version an agent can read

The site describes itself in the formats agents and search engines already look for, so nothing here needs a scraper.

/llms.txt Lists all 364 datasets with their latest download URLs.

/mcp A remote MCP server with 12 tools. It needs no key.

/openapi.json Describes the query API in OpenAPI 3.1. The API needs no key.

/d/<slug>/index.md Every page except an embed has a Markdown twin with the same facts.

/d/<slug>/fields.json Gives each field's type, range and values for every dataset.

schema.org Dataset Every dataset page carries a schema.org Dataset record for Dataset Search.

/catalog.json Lists all 364 datasets as a DCAT catalogue.

/.well-known/ard.json Lists the site's tools for agent directories.

The datasets people have voted for most, which we build in this order. One click adds a vote, and nobody has to say who they are.

Licence first

Every dataset carries a licence id, an evidence URL from the publisher's own statement and the attribution the licence asks for. The build refuses to publish anything that is not open.

Nothing derived

Cells are typed and headers are renamed. Rows are left alone. No rates, rankings or thresholds are added, and a suppressed cell stays suppressed.

Provenance in every file

JSON, Parquet, SQLite and GeoJSON carry the publisher, licence, attribution, source URL and source hash inside the file.
